Pulse. The best kept secret in the wizarding world…or is it?
When Wyatt Yaxley was nineteen, he attended a business meeting with his father, Minister of Magic William Yaxley, purely for appearance’s sake. While his father was shaking hands, Wyatt couldn’t help but let his eyes and ears wander. There were a few men at the other end of the conference room, packing up their briefcases, rather disgruntled. Their mutterings were, at first, expected. Their wives wanted them home for supper, their children needed help with their homework. Then one let it slip: “Lying to them wouldn’t be hard…if only we had something to lie to them about…to get away from all that s—t.” Wyatt would raise his eyebrows and think, and not stop thinking for the next three weeks. His life was slowly turning upside down.
A year later, a project was forming before him. Pulse was a life changing idea. An underground, after-hours club for the higher-ups in wizarding society to escape to? They’d serve only the finest firewhiskey and feature only the most charming women- namely Veela. It was a great idea, but it was a dangerous idea. If word of this establishment was to surface, the reputations of its clientele would be ruined, and Wyatt Yaxley would be in trouble with a large group of very powerful people, not to mention the wrath of his parents. He couldn’t do it alone. He needed the help of two very important people.
His sister was fresh out of Hogwarts, but she was intrigued. Harmony was a spitfire-type girl, afraid of very little, and with just enough guts to be his business partner. She’d be in charge of personnel, meaning finding and hiring veela entertainers, bodyguard wizards for protection, and even a few others for bartending and other oddities. But even Harmony, with her quick wit, couldn’t come up with the amount of money needed for startup. For that, Wyatt turned to his cousin, Emrys Burke. He presented the idea carefully, but Burke took his bait. Burke would be their leading investor, and thus had a hand in making important decisions. His background in business and dealing with the top of wizarding society would make him an excellent advisor.
With Emrys’ pocket change and Harmony out on the hunt, Wyatt began to make his way into the top-floor Ministry offices, spreading careful word. Not even a year later, Pulse was up and running, more successful than anyone could imagine. But word travels fast, sometimes too fast, and not even Wyatt Yaxley could keep everyone under wraps. Their bodyguards were good incentive for people to keep quiet, but not all could keep their mouths shut.
Deena Macmillan heard about the existence of the club in passing, and as a writer for the Daily Prophet, decided to investigate further. She has found very little, however, only what rumors have suggested: that there is a secret, underground entertainment club for wealthy ministry officials to relax on the weekends and after work. Business relationships can foster or strengthen inside the club, which is why admittance is desired, and crucial. The name, location, and associated personnel are all under speculation. But Deena is determined to discover more.
Though Deena Macmillan thinks she is the only person on Pulse’s scent, she is wrong. The Minister himself has gotten wind of the possible existence of an underground entertainment club, the name of which has reached his ears. According to a young veela woman (to remain anonymous), Pulse has been soliciting young veela, such as herself, to join them as dancers and entertainers. This is all that the woman remembers, however, as Obliviate was used against her as a defense mechanism when she decided to resign. However, she does remember one other thing: Pulse has been beginning to function as less than a club and more as a brothel, though still in early stages. Because this tips Pulse over the line of legality, the minister decided to take action. He called Tamzin Lupin into his office.
Tamzin Lupin, a young, successful veela working in the Department of International Magical Cooperation, has been rising the ranks of the Ministry ever since she began working there. A hardworking woman, her efforts have been noticed by many, and many whisper that she, one day, may take over William Yaxley’s office. During their meeting, William explained the seriousness of the rumors about Pulse, and asked Tamzin to join the task force assigned to uncover the wizards and/or witches behind the club’s existence. Because she herself is a veela, no matter how her appearance changes, Tamzin’s charms will still work exactly as a veela’s. William asked her to take an extended leave from her position as Ambassador to France and give the appearance of being on vacation, while actually working undercover at the club, discovering all of its secrets, and building a case to slowly bring them down. Tamzin agreed.
What will happen? Wyatt has turned a blind eye to Harmony’s exploitation of her employees into prostitutes, despite his name being stamped on every document involved with Pulse. Will he tell her to end the chain, or use it for profit? Emrys and Tamzin are now living together- will he sense that the fresh, new veela dancer is actually her? How will Tamzin react when she learns that Emrys is involved with the club that the minister’s son is running? Will Deena Macmillan discover anything and release it to the presses before the ministry can get to it? And will Diana Macmillan, engaged to Emrys, enraged at Tamzin, and sister to Deena, get mixed up in the mess? Time will tell…
Is your pulse racing?
